Barefoot Vows & Waterfall Dreams in the Shawnee Forest
There’s something undeniably freeing about leaving tradition behind and choosing a wedding day that feels entirely your own. For some couples, that looks like a quiet escape into nature. No schedule, no pressure, just intention. After 13 years of being together and engaged since 2020 Tom & Lisa chose to do just that in the heart of Shawnee National Forest. Jackson Falls has been very special to them as they frequently travel here for rock climbing & even got engaged here.
They arrived in a vintage Volkswagen bus, and asked us to hop in to head down a path for some beginning portraits. (I totally geeked out and now want one too) The bus has been a symbol of adventure and a slower, more meaningful way of moving through life together. We then started the hike to the waterfall to meet their officiant. Hiking boots were traded for bare feet as the bride stepped onto the forest floor, grounding herself in the moment. There, with no audience but the trees, they exchanged vows. No arches, no aisles just the steady rhythm of the falls behind them and words that mattered more because they were spoken in a place that felt alive.
After the vows I asked if they’d like to get in the falls and without hesitation they stepped into the water. Full of laughter and fully immersed in the moment, letting go of everything except the joy of being together. It wasn’t staged or planned to perfection. It was real.
That’s the beauty of elopements: they don’t have to follow any rules. Whether it’s a vintage bus, a barefoot hike, or a spontaneous swim beneath a waterfall, your wedding day can be anything you want it to be. Wild, quiet, adventurous, or somewhere in between. Because at the end of the day, it’s not about what a wedding “should” look like. It’s about creating a day that feels like you.
