Bell Smith Elopement: Making Memories at Devil’s Backbone in the Shawnee National Forest
Growing up, some of my favorite memories were made right here at Devil’s Backbone in Bell Smith Springs, one of the most beautiful areas of the Shawnee National Forest. I learned how to skip rocks in this very spot, and countless weekends were spent camping, hiking, and exploring these trails with my cousins. Climbing the massive rock formations and spending long summer days outdoors became a cherished part of my childhood.
Years later, it feels incredibly special to return to the same place as an elopement photographer. Bell Smith offers some of the most stunning scenery in Southern Illinois, making it a perfect location for couples seeking an intimate wedding experience surrounded by nature. From the crystal clear water to the dramatic rock formations of Devil’s Backbone, every corner of this hidden gem creates a beautiful backdrop for adventurous elopements.
One of the greatest blessings of photographing elopements in the Shawnee National Forest is sharing these meaningful places with couples who are creating memories of their own. I love knowing that the same trails, overlooks, and swimming holes that shaped my childhood are now becoming part of someone else’s love story. My hope is that every couple who chooses to elope in the Shawnee leaves with memories they’ll cherish for a lifetime and someday share with their own families.
If you’re dreaming of a Midwest adventure elopement, Bell Smith and the Shawnee National Forest offer breathtaking landscapes, peaceful solitude, and endless opportunities to celebrate your marriage in a way that feels authentic to you.
